Monitor goes blank when installing
 

ECS mobo
AMD 1600+ XP
40 gig HD
64 MB PC100 -or- 256MB PC3200 (Tried both)
NVIDIA DELL oem FX5200 Ultra

Redhat 9.0

I've tried installing linux with the GUI mode and as soon as anaconda is loaded and it tries to load xserver ( i think thats what its called) the monitor goes blank, its still on with a green light, just blank. It dectects my mouse, and my monitor (DELL P1110) correctly and the says VESA (generic) loaded, then poof, blank screen.

So I tried in text mode and can install everything, choose NVIDIA FX (generic) for the vid driver and when it tries to start up it goes poof again...any ideas? TIA

The problem is caused by your video card. I can think of many ways to get around this here is the easyest

1. Install a standard VESA card for the install download the nvidia driver from http://www.nvidia.com. Shutdown your box put a nvidia card back in and install the driver

Try going to http://nvidia.com and downloading the official nvidia drivers. Install them from the command line (it's really easy, just follow the directions) and see if that works for you.

I've got the newest Linux drivers on a CD now and am at the command line, I've mounted the CD and can see the file, but I'm not sure what to do now, I need to copy the .run file from the CD to /root right? then I just run sh "fliename" and it should start up? sorry, super nub question here: whats the command for copying the file from the CD to /root, Ive been going through the mans and cant find it =/

I just tried running the sh "NVIDIA blah blah blah".run from the cdrom and it says:

Verifying Archive integrity...Error in check sums 3049780004 3576152050

any ideas, your help is greatly appreciated.
