Monitor changed but linux is not booting...

1.i wanted to update my opensuse 10.3. so i took my pc to my friends place since i don't have internet. I connected my cpu to his monitor and started my system. I got the opensuse splash screen and suddenly it turned black. His monitor is samsung 17"CRT and mine is viewsonic 17" tft widescreen. so i went to edit xorg.conf file located at /etc/X11/ to change resolution and refresh rate of the samsung monitor. But i don't the exact location in the code to edit.which text editor should i use to edit and how do i save it. How make a backup of xorg.conf before editing since i'll again connect it back to my viewsonic monitor. Please me.

2. How do i configure to internet in opensuse? My friend is using overcable internet connection.

Why do you think it makes a difference which editor you use? It only makes a difference to you, so use your preferred editor. Obviously how you save a file depends on which editor you're using.

You can just make a copy of the file with a different name, e.g. "cp xorg.conf xorg.conf.backup". You can also use SaX2 to configure X: http://www.novell.com/documentation/...ha_y2_hw_graph.
