Modifying the Linux boot process....

How do I setup the boot process to only boot to runlevel 3, (multi-user, console login only)??? I don't want graphic mode.

Also, If I wanted to add a custom procedure/script to run at boot time, where would I plug this in to make this happen? It would only need to run when or after entering runlevel 3.

Peace,
-Jack

On most Linuxes, edit /etc/inittab. Find the line that looks like:
Code:
id:5:initdefault:
and change the '5' to a '3'. Reboot or 'init 3'.

You need to make your script a 'service' Put your script in /etc/rc.d. Run
Code:
chkconfig --add yourScriptName
chkconfig --level 3 yourScriptName on
man chkconfig

--- rod.

Depends mightily on the distro in use. The init scripts can (will be) be totally different.
