Modifying a Distro

Basically I want to do is change the 'default' graphics like the KDE bootup screen, login screen graphics, taskbar images, default system icons etc but I am having lots of trouble doing this. I am currently reading through the Linux from scratch guide but it is not answering my questions. Could someone please point my to some documents or give me some help... If i am able to do this it will help me and my mum out heaps! (she is a Windows nut and can not understand why there is no start button etc)

If you think you can help please reply
Thanks heaps!

All the icons for kde are somewhere here:
/usr/share/icons/default.kde

look into it, to find the icon you wish to change.
(allways make a backup first though)

secondly, for theming, in the kde center you can actually skin the looks quite easy.

Awesome, ill check it out now. I'm hoping Mandriva uses a similar kind of file structure and it's that easy. I'm trying to find a guide to remastering it now... but not much luck, think im using the wrong search terms. Funny enough Windows Live search seems to be pulling in better results than Google, lol.

If anyone has an idea on where i can get a good manual/guide to remastering could you please post. I would prefer Mandriva but thats only because it's the distro i have used most and it looks quite nice and easy. I'm not sticking to it though, i'm happy to change to another one, looks are all that matter atm.
