I have been given an external modem which I configured to work with Linux
However I would like my service provider to be able to identify the modem
with AOL software it does just this on windows. Has AOL got software compatable for linux.
The whole thing is very confusing. I would like to connect to the net via linux but unless AOL software can help I feel out of my depth doing it manually
Please help one very new newbie

hi there

i think u should just use a internet dialer and try to get connected with the ISP
since i do not think u should be having any problem with external modem in linux. internal modems do give problem for drivers

some internet dialers are
kppp

and wvdial
man wvdial,man wvdial.conf will help u

and if u want to knowmore about the modem ur using u can get the scanmodem utility from www.linmodems.org and see the results

regards

Thankyou for your prompt reply but I really want to go via AOL and let them connect my modem like I have in windows.I think it,s because I don,t really understand fully what to do the way you have explained. Also I wonder if AOL have compatiable software for linux. Gosh I,m such a newbie.
