modem wont dial in on mandrake 10

hello.
i installed mandrake 9.2 the other day and all was well. until my flatmate needed to use the phone and i had to disconnect the internet. i didnt know how so i just turned the modem off. all well and good.
now for some reason the modem has only one light at the top and one at the bottom lit up instead of the usual 2 lit at either end.
and now mandrake wont connect me to the internet at all. it picks up the modem being there but wont start dialling.
i even upgraded to mandrake 10 hoping to fix this problem.
i have also gone back into win 2k (i have a dual boot) and the modem dials in fine.
how do i fix this?

the control center thingy. when i add new connection it detects the modem and i put all the information in, but when i say yes to connect to the internet now it just doesnt dial a thing. eventually it says its not connected to the internet and im back at square one.

erm being a newbie i will take a guess at what that means. heh.
that mean do i have the location right for where the modems supposed to be? if so the control centre detects exactly where the modem is, just wont dial.

Yoy don't have to go into the control centre to manage your connection. I actually prefer to just run kppp and configure it from there.
Try typing kppp in a terminal, try to connect and then post the terminal output.

thanks for your help guys.
i ended up using vwdial or wvdial (or whatever it was called)
it works well enough.
what i would love the most would be a nice gui dialer for the desktop with options to not reconnect on disconnection and to just dial with a double click. but maybe thats for another post. heh.

I find kppp has all those abilities but there a few front ends to wvdial.
