Modem... which one to use? and other questions

:newbie: :Pengy:

I have no clue what modem I should be using with my Red Hat 8 distribution.

I tried Red Hat's hardware compatability list, and it didn't really show me anything but a Generic modem.

Well... what counts as a generic modem?!

I currently have a NewCom 33.6K Internal PCI Data/Fax/Voice modem that does not work at all in Red Hat 8.0. Something about it being a WinModem...

I'm looking to either getting the modem I have to work or getting a v.92 56K modem. Any suggestions from anyone? Would Creative/Broadxent work? Or... if I just go to CompUSA and get CompUSA's brand modem, wouldn't that work???

BTW: I have a MSI Socket 7 motherboard, with some screwy PCI slots... My modem's IRQ constantly changes on its own during startup.

I use America Online for my internet connection. Is there a way I can connect to the Internet from Red Hat Linux using my AOL account, or should I just cancel AOL and go with another provider? Broadband isn't available in my area yet.

Anybody know how to "un-initialize"/"un-format" a hard drive?

read the box carefully, phrases like designed for win98/me/xp/abc/whatever, are a big red flag. if it doesn't say linux compatable, look for dos compatable, it should be a hardware modem. or just get a usr sportster external serial modem and be done with it :)
