Modem Troubles
 

Hi all.

I am running Mandriva 2008.1 Spring, 32bit.

I have an internal U.S. Robotics 56k Fax WIN Modem. I only have dial up were i live so thats the reason im trying to set up a 56k modem, lol.

In Mandriva, it has the on-board HighSpeed modem detected and installed. But it has not detected or installed my dial up modem.

I am very new to Linux and so i do not know a lot about it. With Windows i would just simply insert my modem driver CD, run that, restart, and it would work. I tried that with Mandriva but Mandriva does not start the install.

So i guess i am wondering, how do i get it to find this modem,install it, and connect to the internet.

Thanks in advance for your help, i am a total Linux noob but am eager and excited to eventually get rid of my Windows and use only Linux, that is if i can get it running, lol.

I'm stuck in the boonies with dialup, so I feel your pain! Winmodems, while incredibly cheap, rely on software for many functions - software that is ONLY available for Windows (hence the name). There are resources online that explain how to get it working with Linux, but my advice is that you buy a hardware modem. I found one on eBay three years ago for around $20 (USRobotics 3CP2977). This box had a winmodem in it too. Worked poorly under Vista.

Got rid of Vista after I got a real hardware modem which worked much better than the winmodem under Vista. Works even better under linux.

If you get an internal it will be a little harder to config, I think than an external.

I got an internal USR5610c. I use Ubuntu and under it you need to do pppconfig in terminal FIRST, then config with network manager. Works great.

I have 64 bit Mandriva 2007 Spring in my multi-boot system.
I just bought a USRobotics USB modem model 5637 the other day. I had wvdial already installed, so I just ran the command: wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf and wvdial found it and configured the /etc/wvdial.conf file which I had to edit to put in my ISP information.
I'm not sure how wvdial will react if there were two modems supported by the kernel, as wvdial won't see a modem if there is no driver/module for it installed or supported by the kernel. If I were you, I would disable the on-board modem in the computer setup (bios), then maybe Mandriva will see the PCI modem. The Linux kernel already has the driver for USRobotics modems, you just need to configure your dialer.
If you decide to give wvdial a go, install it with urpmi or software installer to satisfy dependencies.
