MODEM/ROUTER D-Link model DSL-524T

Hi all.
I am from Italy and my ISP gave me this fu***ng modem/router.
There are no informations about making it working good.
DSL connection is badly instable.
Does anybody knows something about this serious problem?
Firmware upgrade or downgrade?
Or throw it away, is the only valid solution?

Not knowing nothing about this unit but from the quick google info I seen I am guessing you configure the router to the connection of your provider. Then the 4 ethernet ports I assume will send dhcp server settings and this allows computers connected to it to get an IP from it and make a connection. The computer should have nothing to do with the internet connection. I am I correct in thinking that?
