Modem Problem / Red Hat 9 Help

Hello,

I've just set up a dual boot system with XP and Red Hat 9. From what I can see of Linux so far, I love it. I have one major problem - my modem. RH wasn't able to detect my modem and I'm not sure what to do. This is an Intel modem that came installed in my machine and I have no documentation for it. This is what I know about it from Windows:

Intel v92 Data Fax Voice modem
PCI slot 4 (bus 2, device 12)
Com 3

I'm a complete Linux newbie (big suprise) and could really use some help. Thanks!

You probably (read: very very likely!!!) have a winmodem it will not work with linux. I have just went through this. Basically linux needs a hardware modem that does not use drivers and software like that. winmodems use up processor resources by running off of software. Thusly, winmodems are really cheap. I solved this problem by giong to best buy and picking up a Creative Labs Modem Blaster it cost me about 40 dollars but it works. I think that most any of your external modems will work with windows. You may be able to get your winmodem to work but since you are a newbie, like me. You would probably just mess something up, like me. anyways, good luck.
