Before I start I am a complete newbie! I have been running Linux for about 2 hours now. I intalled Red HAt 7.1 with no problems. GREAT! I set up my modem (a generic external 56k V90 modem and a winmodem - not used), and when I tried to dial up the modem dialed up the server and then cut out.

I went to the debug program (sorry for being so vauge) for the modem and it said it couldn't initialize the modem. What is happening. I had to reboot into Windows Me just to connect to the net. If you could help, thank you very much.

Also, what is a good office program for Linux, I have copies of Open Office sitting on my desk, is it any good? I also have the KDE office suit installed but it doesn't seem to be very comprehensive.

Thank in advance

Hopefully some redhatters here can help with the modem configs.

I use Star Office (mostly for compatibility w/MSOffice) and I'm really happy with it. THe MSOffice thing was a hard habit to break at first, but it's a short curve.

Hello
Have you tried checking the "let ppp do all authentication" box in the advanced menu of the dial up configuration.
Also when I updated my kernel to 2.4.2 I had to update pppd, I guess ppp should be right if you're using 7.1 but you never know.
If debug couldn't initialize the modem, I would suggest it was trying to use the winmodem, rather than the external, which works to some extent. My system got confused on this issue until I removed the cursed winmodem from the box.
Regards
Jim

Thanks, but I finally discovered the problem, Red Hat was doing the right thing, it was my ISP that chucked a fit, they lost all my account details and so assigned me a new password (never mentioned it to me) and that's why it would dial up the server and then disconnect. Thanks for all the help.

I'll close this thread as soon as I find out how

Why dont you look in your windows and see which com port your modem is allocated too and make sure you have the same thing setup in linux. Also, make sure you aren't using a winmodem in linux to try connecting to the net
