modem initializing for ages and..


hello everybody
i have mandrake 9.0 and i am a tottaly newbie, i use mandrakes control center and kppp to connect , and taking the reply :
initializing modem...... without anything happens
i have a 'vikings 56k usb modem'
is it a winmodem? i have downloaded and tried the scanmodem utility but, nothing is clearer for me ... i also tried to install some drivers without any succes
now when i try to shut down my pc i get:
umount/net dev busy
and i have to shut it down mannually
i would appreciate some help

In kppp, click the 'Query Modem' button. If you don't get a list of responese from the modem, you either are using the wrong device or it's a winmodem.
