Angry Modem initialisation takes too long

I have a dial-up Internet connection using a Netcomm Mega-i-Modem 56 (external modem) that takes between one and three minutes to initialise when trying to connect to the Internet using ppp (KDE).

I have tried several different distributions (Fedora, Mandrake 9.2, Knoppix, LindowsCD) and all have the same problem.

When I query the modem it is correctly identified and when it eventually connects it wooks fine (generally connects at 48K bps).

Needless to say, the problem does not occur on my Windows 98SE dual boot.

An internal hardware modem (previously installed) worked fine with Lindows - and ONLY Lindows!).

Any thoughts out there? Or is this how it's supposed to be?

Regards,
Peter

"takes between one and three minutes to initialise when trying to connect to the Internet using ppp (KDE)."

Try using wvdial instead of kppp. It is much easier to play with the initial modem commands in wvdial than kppp. I think that you can install wvdial without messing up kppp, then use whichever one works best. Once you get wvdial working then you can play around with the init commands in /etc/wvdial.conf to try and speed up the process (assuming that you still have the same problem with wvdial).
