Modem help!

Hi there,

I am new to Linux and have just installed Redhat 8.0 on my laptop (Samsung v20 xtc).

Biggest problem so far is Redhat didn't recognise my modem so I have had to download the drivers.

Now I really am a novice so I need help here! The instructions advise me to correct my path to my local linux kernal in the makefile but I haven't a clue how to get the info.

I read a previous post which was similar suggesting to start yast2 but I don't know how to do that either!

Sorry for being thick but I am trying :) Anything over Windows I say.

Duncan

Need more info ......Really I have no idea what your typing about from what I can gather in most cases you would need to compile the modem module into the kernel--Most cases...

You would need to post the modem name the drivers you have to answer what is ment by your suggestions

We cant help u unless and until u tell which is ur modem chip

give the o/p of the command lspci or at least tell which modem u have ..

if u have a motorola sm56, connexant /pctel internal modem we can get it work for sure.. plz dont waste time by putting incomplete questions

dino2387 07-09-2003 08:11 PM

O.K. Sorry

I am sorry that i did not give enough info, but i was in a hurry, and i was so surprised to find someone in the same position to me.

So,

I logged in and typed lspci on the gnome terminal and these are parts of what was displayed?

00:00.0 Host Bridge : Intel Corp. 82845G/GL [Brookdale - G] Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 01)

00:1d.0 USB Controller : Intel Corp. 82801DB usb (Hub #1)(rev 01)

00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corp.82801DB SMBus

00:1f.6 Modem : Intel Corp 82801DB AC'97 Modem

I know that you are probably interested most in the last entry, but i do not know what the smbus is? Any Idea?

Also, in Windows the modem is registered as : SENS LT56ADW Modem, provider LT.

Another thing is that although Linux seems to have found the Ethernet port, i do not think that it works.

I tried to install Redhat 8 and it found the Ethernet port, but would not work, the modem it would not even find.

So, i then tried Mandrake 9.1, and as i am a novice, i do not even know how to set a connection up, i think, but am still not sure if it works, well i am sure that it doesn't as i could not get onto the net with it.

The version of windows i have is XP.

Hope that this is enough info, need anything more specific to try to help just ask as i am in your debt anyway.

Cheers,

Dino

I use a Motorola SURFBoard in kernal 2.4.21-0.12mdk and it works fine!! The connection is faster then it is with the same modem, and same computer in WinXP!

Duncan:
Is the modem internal or external??
Internal: linmodems.org
External: What type? Cable? ADSL? DSL? T1?

juby 07-10-2003 04:25 AM

First of all i havent used an intel modem.. but i think that ac 97 is nothing but a conenxant chipset based modem ...

u can download the drivers from
http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf

it will be an rpm file.. for ur version of linux.. thats very very imp to get the right version for the kernel

after downloading it and copying it onto ur linux partition, cd to that directory and issue

rpm -ivh <nameofurdriver.rpm>

that will install the driver
there is a FAQ & readme fiel which u shud go thru..it has all the instns to install the driver

also chk out ths site for ur ethernet

http://ds9a.nl/dell-d800/

hope this helps (y)

Hi there,

Sorry for the delay replying!

I have found out since starting this thread that my win modem will definitely not work due to it being a Lucent AMR modem :(.

I have bought a PCMCIA modem which I am now having problems with due to autoconfig failing :(.

Love Linux but getting a bit frustrated not being able to get on the net at home with it!

If anyone can help with the autoconfig failing that'd be great :).

Errors as follows:
cs: memory probe 0xa0000000-0xa0ffffff: clean.
register_serial(): autoconfig failed
serial_cs: register_serial() at 0x0af8, irq 4 failed

I have tried a couple of things like altering the config.opts file to not use irq4 but to no avail :?.
