modem hangs up frequently

Hello,

I've had a problem with my dialup connection under linux for some time now which I can't ignore anymore: the modem hangs up for no apparent reason. As a result, I am no longer able to run up2date to upgrade my RedHat system. I can dial into my isp with no problem, and I can stay logged on for hours, no problem. But there are two cases when the modem misbehaves:

1) When I first bring up Mozilla, or Netscape (after booting up) and it goes to check my mail, I get disconnected (most of the time, but not always). If I log back in, I can then check my mail and I don't get disconnected anymore.

2) When I try to run up2date, the modem hangs up whenever it starts downloading the rpm's.

Now when I just surf the web, I never get disconnected. If I dial in under my Windows partition I never get disconnected. I've tried dialing in through different phone numbers and that doesn't solve the problem.

I'm completely baffled by this problem, and I've now spent a week trying to update RH and I've only managed to download 34% of the rpm's. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions you might have. The following is the KPPP log file after it complains that the pppd process has died with exit status 16

try other updaters like red-carpet:
http://www.ximian.com/products/redcarpet/
not sure whats going on with your modem, try running your internet as root..see if you have similar problems

Thank you Jatt_thugz for replying to my post.

I've tried running up2date as root and that doesn't solve the problem. I will try red-carpet to see if it works better. In the meantime, I'm still holding out hope that the problem can be fixed at the source. I've tried dialing in using wvdial, and I still get the hangups, but there were additional error messages in the /var/log/messages file and I've pasted the last lines in the file. Is there a clue in here? Are there other log files I should be looking at?

Any suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I am having a similar problem, but with a PCTel Linmodem. I wonder if its something to do with hotplug? I have recently installed RedHat 9 on my PC. It used to have RH 7.1, but with KDE and kernel compiled from source, and the linmodem worked with that so I know its not my hardware. I've decided to go for RH 9 and just use patches from up2date to make things simpler.

I load the pctel and ptserial modules with the following:

[root@localhost root]# insmod -f pctel
Using /lib/modules/2.4.20-8/misc/pctel.o
Warning: The module you are trying to load (/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/misc/pctel.o) is compiled with a gcc

NOTE the -f force option is recomended by the README with the code.

Using wvdial gives this, which looks to me like the modem has successfully dialed and got a carrier tone:
