Modem disconnects

Hi everyone,

I have just joined this board and think its just great.
Obviously i am here cause im a newb running mandrake 9.2 and really digging it.

You never really know what you have been missing until you try something different ey.
But as with all new things they have there problems.

Ok so here goes. :D

1. When i connect to the internet , if i dont start something that keeps in-touch with the isp the modem disconnects after about 3 minutes or so ( very irritating) I havent been able to find out how to disable this. Right now when i connect I start an irc channel just to keep the modem on-line all the time.

2. I do not have an isp provided e-mail account so i was wondering if there was a way to set up mozilla-mail to connect to the internet e-mail account that i use and retrieve my mail from there.
What will this be POP3 IMAP etc or something totally different.

mozilla mail will walk you through the setup the first time you open it. you will need to know whether the account is po3 or imap, as well as, the address of the outgoing and incoming servers. this info can usually be found on a link from the homepage of the account provider. hope that helps w/#2.

Depends on the email provider. If you're talking about Yahoo email accounts, or the like, then they're not POP3. Hotmail uses a special protocol that allows Outlook to download emails from it - and there is a Linux project that allows you to do this (search for hotwayd). As a quick test - if you can access your emails using "mail2web" (not entirely sure of the url) then you can set your Mozilla Mail to read it too.

After you get it installed "somewhere" in options/tools there is an option to "check your mail" every few minutes. [Mine is set at 3 minutes]

Next time you boot up, check your mail first then leave Thunderbid "open" use the minimize button. Now you ISP will see steady "activity".
