Modem Configuration
 
Hi,
My Name is Elias Naseef. I'm from Syria and I live in a small village called Ma'aret Saydnaia. I have an acer aspire 5315 laptop and I have just installed Linux fedora 9 x86_64 on it. Every thing seems to be working well, but I need help to setup my dial-up modem (Agree System HDA modem) which was not detected by the installation proccess. PLEASE HELP.

Is that a serial modem, or is it built into the laptop?

If it is a built-in modem, can you open a console as root user, and type lspci -vv and then copy&paste into here the output of the section which refers to the modem?

For the record, that modem sounds like a 'Win-Modem' (made for Windows) which are notoriously tricky to get to work properly under Linux, but if you can provide some more info about it, we may be able to help. There are drivers for Lucent/Agere modems, but the question is: is there a suitable driver for Fedora, and also, more importantly, is there one for the 64bit version. Maybe not.

Anyhow, please provide the output of the command I gave above, as well as any other info, like model numbers, serial number, of the modem.

Many Agere modems are not supported in Linux, this is more than likely an internal PCI modem.
Visit linmodems.org (on-line), download and use the scanModem tool, it will produce all kinds of text documents in a folder called Modem in the directory you are in when you initiate this scrip. There will be a file called 'modemdata.txt', this file will tell you if it's supported, and if it is, it will tell you what to do.

Hi,

I want to thank both "GrapefruiTgirl" and "Junior Hacker" for their kind interest and proffessionl instructions.

I have downloaded the scanModem tool, and I'm working on it now.

As for GrapefruiTgirl's advice, I ran the lspci -vv command and I'll post the output it gave as soon as I retrieve it from linux, because I seem to have mistakenly lost it -stupid me!- so, thanks again and bye.
