Modem attempting during boot

Fedora Core 4.

I just installed a controller based modem. It worked just fine. Fool that I am, I then configured the modem to dial at boot up.

Now FC4 hangs and I have no idea how to boot the system. Is there an equivalent to Microsoft's "safe-mode"? I suppose in Linux it would be safe, but that's another discussion.

I realize it's against common sense to ask for email responses, but I may end up at the public library, reading this forum on their dime.

So, if anybody will oblige, I am

Well you all get my degree of despair. I've been waiting for a month to get this modem. And have myself blow-up Linux the first day I get it. Shucks.

Any help appreciated.

Single user mode = safe mode. Add the word single to the name of your kernel when booting. ie linux single.

Modem attempting during boot

First: thanks, all the way from the UK.

Second: So, I unplugged the phone line. Now Fedora booted and ran, almost as before I botched the job.

I get a message about

Localhot.localdomain must be added to file/etc/hosts

Can you tell me if the foregoing can be done? Or would it be better to "repair" the (not so much of a) problem.

Thank you again, Linux Community is leaving me speechless with gratitude.
