"modem is not recognised on linux.have 98 on and is ok.on com4"

Is it a real modem or a winmodem?

Be prepared. Create a LifeBoat CD.

It probably is a winmodem. Most of the big name manufacturers like Dell, Gateway, and Compaq (HP) use winmodems instead of real modems because they are cheaper. Have you tried this site: They have a lot of information on winmodems and links to drivers that will run your winmodem in linux. Enjoy.
