mkinitrd not working

please help me,

how can i install mkinitrd?

i get "bash: mkinitrd: command not found" error when I try to run

mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.6.12.img 2.6.12

did you install any packages required for compiling kernels?

What distro are you using?
