missing step in building a linux

Hello
Suddenly I decided to try building a my own linux , I got two hard disks the first one ghas a redhat 6 server , the second is empty , I make it active and installed grub on it so I can boot from it now , the second step that I am not sure about was to compile a kernel using my redhat and the destination is my second hard disk that is mounted under /mnt , I used the " O=/mnt " with all kernel compilation steps but not everything went to the second hard disk . I couldn't find /bin , /sbin , /dev and also I couldn't find neither kernel itself nor the initrd (they were on the first 1) .

I know that there is a missing step but I can't find out what it is, so plz help .
Also I wish if you can provide me with any tutorial or standard steps on building my own linux
Thanks in advance
