Missing packages in Ubuntu resipotories

Hello,
I am trying to install a printer and scanner combo (HP) that won't work because of the following missing backends and frontends (sane); how can I get them for installation to complete. Mind you I have tried installing the backends for hp using the source but there is the following error:
status not define
after running make -f make.hptools
I need help.

Have you tried installing the sane packages? Do so by running:

$ sudo apt-get install sane-utils

and:

$ sudo apt-get install xsane

They have to be installed before a scanner can be detected.
