Post missing inetd.conf ; setting up ftp, how ?

i followed some website's instruction to set up my ftp on my new linux machine.

but, i can't find the /etc/inetd.conf file mentioned by the website.

what could be the problem of it ?

how to set up my ftp site ?
set up the ftp daemon ?

how to see the default firewall rules of the linux server ?
how to manage it ?

where can i see the settings of my devices like my sound card ?
i find the base volume very low. i would like to know if there is a
way to adjust it.

thank you very much~~!

1) Check for the xinetd file since you probably use xinetd!
2) What FTP daemon do you want to set up? Wu-FTPd? ProFTPd?
3) To check the firewall rules use
iptables -L | more
4) Managing the firewall rules there are quite a lot of ways to do that, either by using a GUI interface like firebuilder or by doing it all by yourself.

markus, you've recommended firebuilder a couple of times now, and i'm pretty sure that it doesn't exist. do you mean firestarter?

Perhaps he meant Firewall Builder. I haven't used it, but it looks like a decent app.
