missing em dash & other punctuation marks in font

I am a font junkie. I love getting beautiful typefaces and getting the fonts just right. In Windows I used Fontographer to tweak fonts.

But I'm having trouble in Ubuntu. In one of my favorite fonts--Iowa Old Style--when I copy the font file over from Windows into Ubuntu, a whole section of stuff just disappears--in particular, the en dash and the em dash. (That's 0150 and 0151 or 2013 and 2014.)

I am also unable to use the Alt+#### command (with Function on and using the number keyboard) to get special characters. Nothing happens.

I don't have either of these problems in Windows. With OpenOffice.org 3.0 I can get the dashes (and other special characters). And I can use the Alt+#### command.

Anybody know what's going on?
