Miscellaneous SUSE Questions
Hello, I am totally new to Linux and having come from an illegal copy of Windows 7 to linux is an education. I have settled on Open SUSE for my main computer cause it kinda looks like Win 7 with the panel on the bottom and a start bar. I am delighted with my progress and what I have tried so far. Everything works and it picked up all of my hardware no problem. I did exactly what you said in your introduction to linux - I tried different distros and settled on SUSE as mentioned but have Ubuntu co-sharing with Win XP on a laptop. Can I ask a few questions as follows:
(a) I eventually got my Epson Stylus Color 760 printer drivers to work properly without messing up (overprinting) second and subsequent pages on all printouts but I guess I have to learn Samba to share it to my dual-boot laptop. Is Samba the best way? (b) The introductory music at power up is sometimes very fragmented in that it plays perfectly somtimes and other times it is only a 'grunt' from the Boston Acoustic set which was excellent on Windows. The sound is onboard on an Abit G7 motherboard but when I try to configure it in Yast it has settings for 5:1 systems but not my twin speaker and one subwoofer set. It plays music perfectly though in Amarok a brilliant music player. This is not a major problem in that my sound is working otherwise. (c) I have a Sony Voice recorder ICD-SX and a Visioneer 4400 scanner but cannot find linux drivers for them on any website but they work with my Win Xp laptop. Should I just be happy with that or is there always linux drivers outthere somewhere? I know Sony are very proprietary and this may be a factor. Anyway I am very happy to have discovered linux for home use and if you have time to answer my questions it would be great. Thanks for your help via the website content so far. |

That is in most distros, and should work out of the box. Now, if you want linux to linux sharing NFS is the way to go. It is much easier, and faster to set up. Printing. The Epsom is on your linux desktop? If yes, you need cups installed, and the driver. I think you have that already. So, for a linux system to print to that server, you need cups, and the print driver only. Now if the client is windows, you need the windows driver on the windows system. Then you add the printer on the linux system. That is, on the windows system, you add a remote printer. Windows will tell you it can not find the driver on the remote system. You just add it from windows. On my home network, I have XP systems, Vista, and Win7 all printing to my linux server. Sorry can advise on the sound issue. The scanner. The source for scanner drivers for linux is the Sane project. The drivers are called 'backends', no idea why, but that is the terminology. This link -->http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html#Z-VISIONEER indicates that scanner is not supported at this time. Believe me, that can change. You have some choices. First, run it on one of your windows systems. Two, if you want to ditch windows, install V-box, install a windows system on v-box, and run the scanner there. I have a HP G4010, until recently there was no support. There is 'basic' support now, I installed the backend recently, and it works; but not at the highest resolutions. I got that scanner to scan slides and printer pictures, so I still have v-box installed, with a XP guest system, and the scanner. I use samba to copy the files back and forth. Don't know anything about voice recoreders.... Hope this helps... |
Samba can be a little tricky but doable with a little direction.
Suse is pretty easy. I use this guide: http://tweakhound.com/linux/suse/112/samba.html You can get into manual configurations but its not needed in Suse. Also on the Windows side you need to turn of manage home groups (or something like that). Good luck with Suse. |
