Mint / Ubuntu mobile broadband connection problems
This subject has been addressed before, But I didn't find one regarding Australian Providers. The particular one I had trouble with was DODO - which actually uses the Optus newtwork. I am still gathering information as to how it was achieved on my laptop, as it was done for me by somebody else. But I will post the answers as soon as I get the information
Any comments or findings or questions in the meantime would be moat appreciated for they will help with the goal to collect all the different angles, so that Newbie members like myself will be able to sift through and find the solutions which work for them. |

HERE is the answer that should work
Make sure that the Dodo Dongle is plugged in to it's usual USB slot Right click Network Connection Icon – a “Network Connections” Window will appear Select the “Mobile Broadband” tag Click ADDhttp://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-newbie-8/mint-ubuntu-mobile-broadband-connection-problems-841604/ A New window called “New Broadband Connection” will appear suggesting HUAWEI etc – Click “FORWARD” Select Country then select FORWARD again Now name your Provider – ie Click button next to “I can't find my Provider and then type in DODO then select “FORWARD” Dodo's APN is dodoins Number is *99# After entering this information Click "Apply" Then do a computer restart Dodo will now start; Should you suffer any disconnections. I have elected to stay with Ubuntu and have now upgraded to V10.10, which is very fast

Well, successfully upgrading to a new version of Ubuntu is a feat in itself. and secondly, instead of dual booting with Windows you can also try installing Windows on the Virtual Box. That way you'll save yourself the trouble of restarting the computer every time you want to get in Windows.

As you have probably guessed, I got help with the upgrade. And it did not all run smoothly some parts of the upgrade failed And the computer ran all yesterday afternoon and all night - using someone else's wireless network. But your other comment re putting Windows on a box - sounds like an excellent plan/solution. : ) Do you know how to accomplish that? Because I have not a clue. Been very ill the last few days and the doctors don't know why. Possibly the Parkinson's having a hey day - it does that. Just when you feel on top of everything, it pokes you in the ribs and says "Don't forget I'm still here. Anyway enough whining - I'm OK now : ) |

its also handy if you know the wi-fi configuration commands,from the command line,saves messing with the Gui although if you choose a better(and there are better)OS although maybe weaker in different areas.
