What version of Mint?

What desktop environment are you using: MATE, Cinnamon, or something else?

Looking at the VM box, it appears it is Ubuntu Mate 32 bit

My own preference is to have as few desktop icons as possible (none is the ideal--I prefer keybindings for frequently used programs and the file manager for finding files), but I did find these. I haven't tested them though:
