Hi.

If you are willing to learn, skip the middle men and go netinst then build it up however you want? I like Sid, I get anything I want working and is blazing fast on this refurbished ThinkPad T420. :D
Code:

su
apt-cdrom add
apt-get install aptitude

The cdrom bit is to add a full DVD to the repositories if you don't get networking off the bat, may need: "non-free-"firmware?

No matter what, have fun! :hattip:

Hi...

Like these? :)

Or; become a developer, it is free to do! SystemD is working fine. Unless you wish to take your bunched panties to the maga thread? :p

It's very slow to boot and load apps when compared to Win 10 which was previously running on the same hardware (Intel DuoCore 1.8GHz w/4GB RAM). Also, there's precious little available for customization of the desktop.

Maybe there's another distribution that's more suited to my needs. I'm a complete noob when it comes to the command line but I am willing to put in the time and effort to learn at least the basics. I want stable, lean, light, fast. I don't need or use the latest bleeding edge bells and whistles.

Browsing, email, music tablature, audio editing, Libre Office, simple basic photo manipulation is what I do 99% of the time on the computer.

Suggestions? Maybe Debian?

Rereading the original post, perhaps Lubuntu would be a good choice, fast, lightweight. You could probably find the apps you want in the
software centre.
I would still be using Lubuntu except that 16.04 no longer comes with cups, which I need for my printer.
I tried the sudo apt-install cups, can't remember now what the error was. But 15.10 still works flawlessly if I wanted to reinstall it.

Oh dear.
There are many flavours of GNU/Linux and all have their merits, if Mint works for you then stick with it. All Debian based distros (and Mint is, via Ubuntu) have the same CLI. You can explore the CLI via Mint just as well as on Debian, Ubuntu etc and if you want to branch out later then you can still do that.

Fred.

Just to clarify (for my sake;) via Debian: Ubuntu, Mint, BASH++ ;) ( now sounds like BASH is from Deb))))
I personally love and will "always" multi-boot +DE\WMs &c.
Currently: Sid, Slackware and Jessie... :hattip:
