Talking Mint 18.3 XFCE Screen Tear


Long story short, I went ahead and reinstalled my OS this morning. I switched from Cinnamon to XFCE when I did the reinstall. I run XFCE on a laptop (a gutted chromebook) and it works great. I am, however, getting screen tearing on this system.

I am running 24GB of RAM and 2GB swap (SSD drive). I will probably turn swapiness to 0 soon. I haven't set everything up yet until I figure out this display issue. On Mint Cinnamon both displays worked great. I had no issues at all. I am really hoping that we can get this right. I know it's an old card, but it's what I have for now. I don't do any gaming on this computer so that's not a concern. I just surf the net, watch youtube, edit PDF's, and compile some programs here and there.

WOW!

I finally found a fix that works- http://duncanlock.net/blog/2013/06/0...iting-in-xfce/

Basically:

You’ll need to switch off any existing compositing you’ve got running, otherwise this won’t work. Unless you know differently, this will be the default one, built into the XFCE window manager, xfwm4.

To switch this off, go into the Applications menu and click ‘Settings Manager’:

Then click ‘Window Manager Tweaks’, then the ‘Compositor’ tab, and un-tick the ‘Enable Display Compositing’ box.

Once you’ve switched off any existing compositor, you can install Compton.
Install Compton

To do that, run the following commands in a terminal window. These will add the official Compton PPA [3] and then install it:

Some of them might need adjusting if you have crappy graphics drivers but should work for anyone with reasonable, up to date drivers & some kind of 3D graphics card.

It worked perfectly for me, on both my desktop dual monitor setup on an NVidia 8800GTS using the current xorg-edgers driver, 313.30 [4] - and also on my laptop with a some sort of crappy Mobility Radeon. By the look of the documentation, the most likely settings that might cause problems with drivers would be vsync and backend.


Now make sure this is all working by starting compton. Press Alt+F2, type compton in the Application Launcher box, then press enter.

Your screen will flicker and you should now have glassy smooth, tear free window dragging, with drop shadows and beautiful fading on window open/close & desktop switching, etc… Try dragging and few windows around, switching workspaces and open and closing things. Bathe in the smoothness.

SET COMPTON TO AUTOSTART-->

Go into the Applications menu and click ‘Settings Manager’, then click ‘Session and Startup’, then select the ‘Application Autostart’ tab.

Click the "Add" button

Enter-

Name: Compton
Description: Compositor for X11
Command: compton

Hit "OK" and you should be good to go!
