Mint 17.3 Locking up

Howdy to all. I am new to Linux and have been learning the land of the land so to speak. I have noticed recently that the laptop will start to periodically lock up on me. The only course of action I have is to do a hard re-start.

I would like to determine the underlying cause of this issue. I can really use some guidance here.

Running Mint 17.3 "Rosa" on a Dell Pavilion G6 that I liberated from MS.

Welcome to LQ.

Are you using the Cinnamon version of Linux Mint 17.3?

You may find that using the MATE or Xfce versions will help.

In any event you would probably be better using the latest Linux Mint 18.1 MATE/Xfce:

See if one of those makes an improvement.

Also make sure that your laptop is not overheating and all the vents are clear.
