mint 17.3 booting to black screen, able to get to grub and terminal
hello, installed mint 17.3 on a hp compaq 8510p was not having any issues, several boots no issues. all of a sudden now booting to black screen. I have the install cd can see my profile, etc ran diagnostic, memory test etc same issue, googled around did not see a fix for it? I can get to terminal from the dvd boot, I am using grub, I hold down shift key during boot and I can get the grub menu, I ran the apt-get update, I am now getting the log in screen but when I log in it blinks to the terminal window then blinks back to the gui. I tried service mdm restart same issue. I created another user profile with the useradd, mkdir and passwd commands same issue. I recall all I was doing at the time was copying data from my old profile then the screen went black. I am able to browse to the home directory and see the profiles. Below is the boot info script.

Try creating a new user for testing, will GUI load properly?

Alright, then we need to look at logs, does it black out when Xorg loads? If yes, then Xorg log should give clues.

I changed the grub to see whats its failing on, its fails on starting smb/cifs file and ad server
everything else says ok. I am getting the initial log in screen for u/n and p/w but when I enter p/w it blinks over to the terminal then blinks back to the gui log in window and keeps doing that when I try to log in, not getting past the log in window. |

could you please use the <Enter> key more often? this is hard to read. first things first: the link gives a 404 error. then: running apt-get update is not enough. it must be: Code:
apt-get update then: you should document your actions for us, and for yourself. how did you create the new user? which commands? how does graphical login fail? another test: after you booted normally (and get a black screen), can you press Ctrl+Alt+F2, do you get a normal login prompt? can you log in, as a normal user? from there you could post the requested Xorg logs. |
