Mint 12 Lisa Live Cd
 

When I tried to preview Mint12 Lisa with an iso disc I got
[ 0.311214] Bug: unable to handle kernal
Does anyone know what causes this and how I might fix it so I can try out Lisa? I did manage to load Mint10 Julia. So all was not lost. I've never been on Linux before so this is all new to me. Windows for about 20 years now. I wasn't installing Lisa, just doing the live cd approach at the time.

My suggestion is making sure you downloaded the correct iso for your computer type. Make sure if you have a 32 bit PC to use the iso Linux Mint has for that computer type, usually it is either an i386 or i686. You do not want the x86_64 or amd64 if you are using a 32 bit machine. That is my first hunch as to what would cause this error. And sometimes, this may be caused by an inadvertent mis-click when selecting what iso to download so do double check that.

I downloaded the 32 bit DVD version. Like I said I've been inside and outside of windows computers for 20 years. I'm starting to think maybe my hardware in my P4 3000 can't support the Lisa version. I installed it on my new laptop and it ran ok even though the laptop is 64 bit. Backward compatible I assume. The problem is I don't want it on my laptop. I wanted it on the desktop. I was hoping it was going to something as simple as wrong version or a tweak but I'm still in need of help. The same thing happens when I try to install the Ubuntu 11.10. I'm thinking hardware because the Mint 10 ran smoothly. I'm open to suggestions still..

Gosh, I hate to say this for fear of retribution, but I will agree Linux Mint 10 was great. But i myself have run into the smallest minute problems anytime I've tried Linux Mint 11 or 12, no matter what PC or whatever I try it on. And they are almost letting their popularity go to their heads because they are getting more and more nutsy on stuff they try to do, just like Ubuntu is doing. They are both great for their ease and simplicity for new users but let go of the great Linux Mint 10 and consider a different distribution altogether. Even Lubuntu is a good choice, actually. And you can still get anything Linux Mint has to offer without the headaches. In fact, I have a Lubuntu 11.10 i386 around here and I have used it many times for different reasons including fixing install problems from Linux Mints gone bad. I tell you, try that... download Lubuntu 11.10 i386 and if you still that kernel error, I rest my case. If not, it's probably LM. Plus, for anyone disagreeing with me out, I simply detest that Linux Mint refuses to list "Google" as a default search engine option in Firefox. I read the reason behind it and it sounds just like a Linux Mint designer, went to the bar there in Ireland, got drunk at happy hour and came up with that one!

Oh, and their IRC live help is lacking too. I went their when they just released their new KDE cause I was all hyped in using it, for once without a problem, but sure enough, I got some problem. Try as the one person in the entire chatroom tried, for about all of 5 minutes, nothing they said to edit in nano etc. whatever worked nor remotely! And this was their own distro?

Now you mentioned Lubuntu!! So what is the difference between Lubuntu...Kubuntu...and Ubuntu? What would be the reason to use one over the other? I can see I have more to read up on. This stuff is so interesting to learn.

Oh, big differences! Really, they are all just Ubuntu using different window managers. Kubuntu specializes in KDE, hence the "K" at the beginning, Lubuntu is Ubuntu using LXDE windows manager hence the "L" and of course XFCE windows manager for Xubuntu. However, that is not the only differences. You see, while Ubuntu seems to be going over the top trying out radical enhancements to their unique interface, probably trying to win out the popularity contest they have with Debian, which is another story, just because Ubuntu makes a change to their design, Lubuntu or Xubuntu don't make those same changes, because they don't fit in to their specialization windows manager. However, behind the scenes, when you update, say Lubuntu from 11.04 to 11.10 you are getting all Ubunutu updates including the kernels minus the zany features Ubuntu is trying on their own desktop. That's the only differences, really. But if you are using older hardware, perhaps troublesome or proprietary hardware, Kubuntu being KDE is not really the best option. Because KDE on any Linux Distribution is made more for high performance machines with lots of memory to handle the graphics that KDE uses. Whereas LXDE is made both for older hardware yet balances speed with simplicity makes Lubuntu the opportunistic choice for some. Xubunutu might work fine too but I've grown accustomed to the ease and efficiency that Lubuntu offers and even on my new laptop, its all the more quicker. That's why I suggest Lubuntu for your situation. It is quite cool actually. And these are just a few of the many window managers out there but they are the four most popular. And by the way, Ubunutu when they were still sane ran the GNOME 2.x windows manager and that was an excellent interface but when GNOME came out with their controversial 3.0 design, Ubuntu upped it a notch and now they are losing fans that just can deal the radicalism. And those fans are going to Linux Mint although now the pressure is on Linux Mint to fill that role of number one so they're experimenting with radical ways to try things, which indeed may hurt them more in the long run too. I think. The whole Debian/Ubuntu group and any distro based on those two really is quite a love affair gone bad in terms of the software designers. You can do google searches for all that drama that's sprung up now and then.

I was an Ubuntu user but after they went to Unity my computer couldnt handle the graphical requirement to I ran to OpenSuSE. I am now running OpenSuSE 12.1 with LXDE and is great. I still have Ubuntu and Kubuntu and a desktop that I use mainly to store files but I dont run upgrades there so I leave it alone.

Yeah, OpenSUSE is a good one try too, Dimocules, and the LXDE one is just as well as Lubuntu would be. Oh, and the Unity he speaks of with Ubuntu is the same thing I mentioned when they decided to start doing weird things with their graphical interface. I hear the next display manager Ubuntu is going to try out is called HUD, (Heads Up Display) and an avid user for a long time had this to say about it "What are they smoking? I'm starting to understand the logic behind the Ubuntu/different window managers. I figure once I install Ubuntu or Mint and start to get use to navigating in it I will understand it more as I go on.
