Mint 10
 

I want to install Linux Mint 10 'dual boot' on my Asus Eee PC 1005HA Netbook, so must install Mint 10 on a USB stick. Using Universal-USB-Installer V1.8.1.5 I tried.
The window that opens will not read the iso file, so I manually entered it. So far so good. Then appears the error ...
can not open file 'J:\isolinux\isolinux.bin'.
In the on-screen installation window is the notification ...
copy to L:\syslinux.cfg
Copy failed.
The desktop computer boots from the Mint 10 DVD,so
that's ok
Anybody have a word of advice ?

Did you go into the BIOS and set the USB as the first boot device? I have not used the USB-installer for my netbook. I used UnetBootin, and it worked like a charm with my HP netbook. One way of the other, you need to set the USB as bootable in the BIOS. That is not a standard way most hardware is set at the factory. Usually the HD is the first boot device.

Are you running the program as an admin user or run as admin?

Also I don't get why it says this, "J:\isolinux\isolinux.bin'" It seems like you are trying to use a cd instead of an iso file.

I was running Universal-USB-Installer inside Windows XP on my Desktop. I am under the impression that it's supposed to work that way and copy the ISO file from the Mint 10 CD (well ... DVD) so at that stage I have not yet changed the boot sequence in the Netbook. I have to get Mint 10 on the USB drive before attempting to install it on the Netbook.

I do not understand why the Mint 10 ISO file on the disc cannot be used.

Try unetbootin to do that job, it has always worked for me.

Hi, im a newbie myself so forgive me if i am saying something you already know. :)

I have downloaded the Linuxmint 10 CD version as an ISO and then used the Universal USB installer to make a successful bootable USB disk.

1. Where did you get the Linux DVD? did you download it? (if you did, it should have been as an ISO file. Did you then burn a DVD from it?) Is that DVD bootable from your PC?

2. As far as I know (I could be wrong) the bootable DVD should NOT contain the ISO file..
the DVD ISO file itself is 800+MB and the CD version is 600+MB so I dont see how the DVD version can have all the contents (as directories and files) PLUS an ISO version of itself.

3. If your DVD somehow DO contain an ISO file, try copying that file in your Harddisk. Put it in the same directory as Universal USB Installer. Run USB Installer, it has a dropdown list for you to choose. If you choose LinuxMint10, it will automatically find and load the ISO file.

4. Check that the ISO is the same filename listed in the USB Installer's list. When I downloaded my ISO, I Saved As it as a different name, USB Installer cant find it, I renamed it back to its original name (including version no etc) and USB installer found it.

5. If all else fails, try re-downloading the ISO again from Linuxmint.com again.

Thanks for all the input. It will take TWO DAYS to download the Mint 10 ISO (don't ask) so I have taken the easy way out and ordered Mint 10 installed on a USB drive.I hope that will work.
