minimize windows on kde

Huge newbie question, not imperative but annoying.

I have been experimenting with KDE and a very interesting thing happens. When I "minimize" a window, it dissapears just like I closed it and I can not see it again. What is that about? Any suggestions are appreciated.:Pengy:

Hi strimp099,
very strange behavior indeed.
The window is not in the task bar? Was it before? Did you check on all virtual desktops? (there should be a little applet on your task bar that looks like a little window with numbers on it. Click on one at a time and see if your window reappears (in the task bar at least).)
Can you also check, if the application this window belonged to (say, KMail for example) is still running after you minimized the window (ctrl+alt+del should bring a window up that shows all running processes, one of the should be kmail (for example))?

Let's hope this is not a bug,

Had the same thing happen on mandrake 8.2 with the version of kde that came with it. (think it was 2.2 not sure though) It worked alright for like 6 or 8 months or so, then one day I minimize konqueror and it disappears. I looked into it a little never figured it out, but I found that if you click the two vertical parrallel lines on the panel you'll get the minimized windows in the panel. When mandrake 9.2 came out I downloaed and installed that, and never had that problem again.

Hey thanks for the replies!

Well, I checked around the virtual desktops and no dice. It is the Derlinux Triangle. Also, ctr+alt+del takes me to a two button selection box that only allows me to sign out, not see running programs. Also, I have a feeling that they are still running because when I log out, the window briefly comes up before it closes, then the I am logged out. Very interesting. Is there a way to check my version of KDE? Where would I go to upgrade it?

Thanks

Hi strimp099,
alright, so probably it is a bug. Can you reproduce the workaround mysterio proposed (thanx mysterio)?
You may want to try, if you can get the app back, when you press [alt+tab]. This cycles through running apps, so that might work.
If this worked, check, if kicker includes an applet named "taskbar" (rightclick on the kicker (kicker is what a windows user would call taskbar and mac user would refer to as the Dock) and select Add -> Applet -> Taskbar (if Taskbar is disabled, you already have it activated. You can try removing (right-click remove -> Applet -> Taskbar and readding (see above) it in this case).

To bring up the process table (since ctrl+alt+del did not work) try ctrl+esc. (I am sorry, I customize my linux a lot. So what works for me does not need to be the right thing for you).

To check what version of kde you are running, start the Control Center (kcontrol or select it in K -> Settings). On the page that first appears, it shows a bunch of information about kde (including the running version).

To update you can check the website of your distribution for available updates. Most distros offer an automated update mechanism. You may want to try that (might be expensive if you pay for online minutes). Although, in my experience, these "simple" tools cause trouble sometimes. Might just be me though.

Good luck, maybe one of these suggestions fixes it for you,

What happens when you right click on the panel and select Add-Applet-Taskbar?
