minimal KDE distro ?
 

hello !

i was wondering if there is any known minimal KDE distro out there ?
i like Mint alot because of this, but they don't make KDE version anymore
and i read if you try put KDE on it that it will break

so, my humble question is, is there any KDE Plasma/5 distro
that doesnt have bloat of all common apps, but just bare minimum ?

Debian is very modular. Anything Debian-based generally will allow you to install only components you want.

yeah but i'd rather to find something that doesn't do "live net install" but rather done ISO

Not true in my case. I'm running Mint 20.2 Cinnamon with KDE Plasma, and periodically switch between the two. No problems from either.

KDE and it's included apps isn't so fat, is it? If you don't want to use a 'K' app, you can just remove it from the menu, or ignore it. Or is it other OS default apps, like LibreOffice, that you don't use? If that's the case, just uninstall them using the package manager.

You might not want your desktop environment to define your distro. Most distros allow you to install multiple DEs. More important would be things like distro focus, security model, package management, etc.

That's kind of an oxymoron isn't it?

You could install arch, then only the parts of kde that you want. Or just install Qt base without kde so that you have the toolkit to use.

That's how you only download/install what you want.

Only thing I knew how to do was use slax creator to make a minimal iso back in 2010 or so when slax was at version 6.

Kubuntu minimal only comes with firefox and KDE.

Another option is AntiX 21 base iso and then use AntiX Package manager to install Kde. Do not use synaptic. Since AntiX is a systemd free distro.

KDE is a heavy weight desktop environment, without apps.... And if you need only the bare minimum (like a browser) better to use XFCE or some other lightweight solution (xubuntu for example).

mmm i dont have problem with heavy alike DE-s, i just wanted a app free DE :D

I use and like KUbuntu 20.04 LTS. Has been really stable for me and I have it installed on several systems. Like Mint, I liked it because a lot of the applications I use are 'included' with initial install.... Not the other way around! In this day and age, going minimal for desktops just isn't necessary as disk space is 'usually' plentiful and cheap. My R&D machine has a 1TB SSD PCIe for OS /, and 1TB SATA SSD for /home for example. Only using a fraction of the storage available on the OS drive. Even with a 128G SSD in my laptop, a full KUbuntu install is still way under 20G (as I recall). I added a 1TB SSD PCIe drive to the laptop as my 'data' drive. Swimming in space!

why don't you try KDE Neon Linux distribution (based on Ubuntu LTS to be precise ubuntu 20.04 LTS) I used to try KDE Neon for some time. those are just some of the default applications for example firefox, system monitor & console. the rest like thunderbird & libreoffice and others you have to install yourself. link: neon.kde.org

Hmm, not so much. Years before, there used to be a project called KLyDE (K Lightweight Desktop Environment). That never came to flesh, though.

Nowadays, there's a project called KaOS (A Lean KDE Distribution). A bit sketchy, perhaps, they have these odd #powerfantasies of moving the kernel from Linux to illumos (OpenSolaris) ... don't think that's gonna happen, but still :rolleyes:
