mini tower Gateway Case and Power Supply

I have gutted my 10 year old Gateway mini tower. My plan is to reinstall the working power supply and purchase a new mother borad equipped with all of the necessities. I will install a new video card to permit a LCD display. I also plan to replace the original 10Gig hard drive with an 80Gig.

My quesiton: Are over-the-counter motherborads bolt-hole compatible with Gateway computers?

Will be overloading my old power supply?

Thanks.

Hardware compatibility

In order to better answer your question...
What model gateway did you have?
What type of motherboard are you looking at?

Some of the older Gateway's actually will work with newer motherboards. Have you taken out the old motherboard and looked at the standoffs for the back plane and where they are located? Can you move them to different configurations?

For me, unless you are going to mod the case I would just go buy a new, cheap case and use it.

I wouldn't mess with reusing the old power supply either. Keep it around for a spare, maybe. Just start buying the pieces for you own home-built PC. You won't save a lot of money, but it's a very worthwhile project. And do be careful not to buy anything that's not Linux friendly.
