Hi, I'm a new Linux user and I need help on which are the really required packages that I need for the minimum ready Linux bootable system, which would be capable of running XPde.

I've got an old 80486 with about 8MB ram and 500MB hdd, and I don't want to use windows 95 on it, when at least I can use XPde meanwhile ..

Any help would be greatly appreciated, especially with setting the new partition with the custom build minimum Linux on a blank hard drive.

i have any idea 'bt xpde.

u can use knopix desto. it needs no partition at all. it will boot from cdrom and u can work on linux w/out instaling linux

I'm guessing XPde is a graphical app and there's no way he can run a Knoppix GUI on 8 megs. I doubt he could run Knoppix at all.

Similarly any X is going to be really hard. I tried a really old version of X with Basic on a 486 with 8 megs RAM and it ran, but it was so slow as to be unusable, really. You can get all kinds of Linuxes to run on that machine, but a GUI's going to be tough. With a 500 meg hard drive, if you can just stick more RAM in it, your choices would open up. ZipSlack and fluxbox on 32 megs works pretty good. I've got that a P100, though - your processor speed would come into play, as well. Probably isn't much slower, though. *g*
