middle click the maximise button to maximise vertically in gnome?

how can i enable the middle click on the maximise button to maximise vertically (and the right click to maximise horizontally) in gnome under ubuntu 8.10?

From what I've seen, you can't do this with the mouse in GNOME, but you can with the keyboard by assigning a hot-key to the action in the GNOME control center.
