Microphone Doesn't Work with Debian Etch

I'm having difficulty getting my microphone to work. I tried everything as far as installing the alsa driver and alsa oss. Nothing seemed to work. Please help me. Do I need to go back to Windows XP?

Not knowing your hardware, there isn't really much we can do, other than recommend the latest alsa-driver, alsa-util and alsa-lib. You can download the latest versions here

There is also this page, while it is ubuntu centric, it did solve some intel audio problems for me....

When you post asking for help with an issue, please provide as much info as possible, to help the people trying to help you. Exactly what computer and audio hardware do you have ?
