Smile Messenger on server


Hi!

I have a server with a debian system on it, i have only the server system installed, so no x-server
Now i want a messenger program on it so i can see on my real computer if the server is up
anyone have any tips on a messenger system that is not graphic?

depends on what you mean by 'messenger' and 'see if the server is up'.

If you by 'messenger' mean something that your 'real' computer can talk to in order to verify that the network is up and computers can connect to your server, one option is to just ping the server. Another is to have inetd run something trivial (such as echo, chargen, time, or whatever) and ask that.

If by 'messenger' you mean something that talks to the MSN IM server, I can recommend bitlbee.

see centericq... has yahoo, msn, icq, aol and... ummm, 6 protocols overall... using it myself... a little bit hard to get used to it but it works...
