Messenger and media player in linux

hi
im running red hat ws, and im looking for programs that match best both MSN messenger and Media player.
currently im using IM for messenger and Mplayer for the media player, but (to me ) they are both a long way off thier window counterparts.

for example in IM you cannot change your display picture, recieve emoticons, play games etc (small but important things!)

and in Mplayer, it will only play certain video files.....

so im looking for some suggestion for programs that other linux users use...

Thanks
Damien

Hi,
as messenger I strongly recommend kopete as it as a very nice gui. Gaim might also be an option. Both have less features than the original msn messenger, though.
On KDE I like to use Kaboodle. Very nice gui too.
Kind of ugly, but working, is xine.

If you cannot play some files, it is because you are missing codecs. One thing you could do is install w32codecs. There is more info available in this forum, use search.

Hi Damien, welcome to LQ.

have you tried gaim?

Have you seen xine?

blogger and LQ member hari has a list of media apps for linux that he thinks are good

Umm. Oh yeah- freshmeat might help you here too.

There has been a thread about windows equivalent programs- google it or use the search function here at LQ.

Have fun- I've given you lots to look at.

Hi Damien, To work out why kopete is crashing, you need to post your system specs- specifically how much ram, swap and processor you have.

Also- are you running kde?

just a quick suggestion- around the output, place [ code ] [ /code ] tags around it. (minus spaces.) The edit button is at the lower right hand corner of your post.

I use Kopete as messenger, works fine and has all the functionlity I need.

For playing movies I use Xine. (Had to install some W32Codecs to get divx/xvid working properly)

For audio I use Amarok / XMMS

Try Mercury for MSN, it's a very good replacement that supports most of the functionality the original does. Sign up to the forums and you can download the lastest betas from in there, just a warning 1711B5 is a bit iffy, I'd wait until beta 6 which is supposed to be any day now.

the short descripton of the problem is.
Code:
the applicaton Kopete (kopete) crashed and caused the signal 11 (SISSEGV).
there seems to be a lot of people with this problem, but no clear answer....ill keep on checking ..
thanks

Try aMSN, it's more like MSN Messenger, but it only offers the MSN service unlike Gaim :P

remove the spaces from the bracket and the letters. I put them there so they would render, otherwize it would look like this:

Code:
see? no spaces between the bracket and the letters.
No need to do it per line.

Use gaim. Simple programs always works. Also it uses a lot less memory than kopete because it uses Gtk. If you want video conferencing use gnome meeting.

Xine is good but it has low tolerance for files. mplayer has a very high tolerance with files but it lacks audio and video sync.

I agree with Electro- eyecandy is an aspect in choosing a program, but if it works, then use it, regardless of whether it looks cool or not.

Kopete for messenger
Xine/Mplayer for videos.
