messed with net settings, now X won't start

i am on campus at Rutgers U. and last night tried to register my computer with their network, and did so successfully, however i still had no internet access. so i tried to change some of my local internet settings, then rebooted, and x wouldn't start. all i had was a command line prompt. i logged in, and tried "startx" and it gave me this error:

Code:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module!
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
(II) UnloadModule: "nvidia"
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found
after searching on these forums i found other people with the same error, however it seems like all of them modified their kernel before hand, which i did not do at all. all i did was remove my internet connection and add it again, would this have messed up the kernel?

thanks in advance,

mgy

I'm not a guru, but I know you can designate a module to load every time you boot without having to type modprobe every time. Try looking at /etc/modprobe.conf as it talks about this file in # man modprobe but I can't say for sure right now. Good luck.
