MEPIS 3.4-3 Display Problem
 

When I put in the MEPIS CD it boots up and asks how I would like to boot MEPIS. No matter which choice I pick it gives me a display that is just white lines. I tried changing the resolution in Windows and restarting and I tried typing in linux xres=1680X1050, and it still gave me the screen of lines. I have a computer with a widescreen display so I don't know if that is my problem. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi There. I have had a similar experience. Firstly, is that the highest res your monitor can display? Try choosing one that one less that the highest (say 1600x1200). What is the graphics card? if nvidia or ATi, the 3.4-3 can confgiure this during your installtion process. Otherwise, have a look at this: http://www.mepislovers-wiki.org/inde..._Display_Setup

I am sure the res you have specified at boot up, is not compatible with the what the hardware can push out. Press F3 and choose the appropriate res at the boot screen. Check in windows what res the display is capable of. Lte us know how it goes,

It didn't work...I tried changing my res in windows and changing the res to match in MEPIS. The only thing that I got that was better than garbage white lines was a black screen with a flashing cursor, but I couldn't do anything. Any other ideas?

What is your hardware specs? what are you doing exactly? sorry to ask so basic questions,

Okay...My processor speed is 1.6 Ghz, I have 1 GB of RAM an INTEL video card...I don't know it came with the laptop. Its a widescreen display so i don't know if that makes a difference.

I downloaded the CD image and burned it, I boot to the CD and I go to the boot screen. I set the resolution for MEPIS to whatever the resolution is in windows. Then I tell it to boot normally(for new system). It runs through all the boot stuff and then goes to a grey screen, where sometimes there's different shades of greay or sometimes there are lines through it. Then after showing that for a while, it changes a little but it is still garbage.

I tried all me resolutions. Any idea?

What happens if you do not choose a resolution? Also have you checked that the copy you have is properly burned; sometimes if the MD5SUMS are not correct (ie download was not done properly; or the burning process was not slow enough (2x or so) then the disc becomes corrupt. Check MD5SUMS.

Okay: lets start here
1. What make of computer do you have?- check if others have had this problem.
2. What is rhe type of grpahics card you have? nvidea, ATI, or simple Intel i810 (usually called 855 or 915 chipsets)- check manufcatuerer site for this (send link here)
3. try without choosing a resoultion i.e. choose the option where it says display problem-- see what happens

From the specs you have given, 1680x1050 res for a laptop sounds like to much, unless I have been ignorant that even laptops these days are coming with such fine pixellage???

I have tried not chosing a resolution and I get the same thing. Also, I'm pretty sure that there is nothing wrong with the download because I downloaded it from the MEPIS site. Also, I tried this a while back with Ubuntu and had a display problem.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 with an Intel i810 915GM Express Chipset.

This is the website for the 915 chipset. I'm not sure if this is what you want but here it is anyway.

I'm 100% sure that my laptop can support 1680X1050. I go into display properties and settings and it's on the highest setting possible and it's 1680X1050.

Great, for some reason, once you have been thru a GUI login, you have to apply a patch for the OS to recognize your screen. But this is obviously goign to come later. First we have to get you to see the GUI.

Have you tried booting with option where it asks you about display problem (one of the grub options at boot time). Not the normal bu the othe roption. See what happens. Also did you check the MD5SUMS on this download. I have had problems with dl and i am using a good T1 connection. Problems also arise when u burn CD at high speed. Use a slower speed like 2x.

Have you also tried the MEPIS forums (http://www.mepislovers.org/, they have a good response rate and would be more qualified than me to help from here.

Yes, I tried to boot with display problem and even the other one that says to boot for older system. I don't exactly know what you mean by checking the MD5SUMS on the download. I'm working on burning it slower but with the program I am using the slowest I can burn is 4x. I'll check out that other site too.

it has a very good step-by-step on setting the display using patch and xorg. It also applies to MEPIS (I have used it when I had MEPIS installed). Good luck!
