Memory sucker

Hi yall,

Is it normal for the system to suck up all avaiable memory ( ..up to a point whereby it then takes chunks of VM) ?? I run RH9, and as I am studying utilise all 4 windows and may have up to 6 documents open using StarOffice. I have only been using Linux for a few days and noticed that in the previous situation, that the system seems really slow. On having the internet connected and these 6 documents open with about 6 html pages also open, StarOffice sucks up 230MB and X 395MB (and other various small progs). Of the 512mb ram that I have 461MB is being used and of the 1020 VM I have allocated 420MB is being used. This is a whopping 882MB!!! I have yet to fine tune the kernal and boot up services, but isnt this ridiculous??
I would of thought that because such a large amount was allocated to X that I didnt meant that it was using it (somehow managing it) but the system can get slow in delays with windows opening and running apps.

Cheers.

There should be a setting in StarOffice to reduce that.
Using all your RAM is good, but swapping and using virtual ram is bad.

yeah....

ive ran my linux with 128, 256, and 512 megs of ram.

in each case it used up all my ram, but then again, whats the point in having Ram if its not being used. i find alot of my ram is being used a disk cache, and when i launch a new program, disk cach goes down ect ect.
