memory (ram) query
 

At the risk of sounding stupid (I prbably do!)

Is there any facility or app available that will tell me exactly what type and model of ram memory I have installed so I don't have to open the case? (I don't even know if opening the case will be of any help!)

I have 256 meg's installed, and I am presuming that it is DDR, but when ever I put the mobo details into "crucial's" memory finder, it gives me about 6 different types supported (at varying prices) and I don't know how to work out which I should be getting.

Not that I know of.

So what kind of mobo do you have?

Do you have the manual for the mobo?

Have you checked the manufacture's website for your motherboard for the info?

I have downloaded both the possible mobo manuals i.e versions 1 and 2, but I can't work out without opening the case to see which one it might be.

Both the manuals only tell me which ram memory the mobo supports, and nothing about how to tell which type is installed.

any other ideas please ???

:) Hi John. You can usually look directly at the ram and read the print on the chips themselves. It will sometimes say "DDR" somewhere in the description. Also, look at your BIOS, sometimes it will tell you in there as well. Another way to tell is find a stick of 1 or the other (either old pc133/100 or DDR) that you KNOW is that type, and try to plug it into the slot your existing stick is in. If it goes in, that's the type. They aren't backwards compatible slots.

I checked the BIOS settings last night, but they don't really mean much too me.

The annoying thing is, that I have Sisoft's sandra software and something called "belarc adviser" that came from the Crucial site, and in both cases (under wind0w$) it just tells me that there is 256 megs installed on a dimm.

So it looks like I just keep trying!
