Media problems

I am new to Linux and am on my third distro. I am impressed with Linux and a good alternative to you know who! I first tried Ubuntu which I liked but could get streaming video or audio to work. I installed media apps, codecs etc.
I then tried PCLinuxOS which looked great and is more 'out of the box' I could get audio but on BBC for example the forward buttons were missing. I am now on Elive which looks amazing and installs very quickly and is the most 'out of the box'.
I can see video and get audio BUT its stops and starts and there are long gaps and this using embedded Real Player and the forward, pause buttons do not show, Windows Media video does not play.
Does anyone know the best distro for media that I do not need to do too much work to get media to work?
Will

I don't think you will find any that will play everything due to the copy rights. Ubuntu will probably come as close as any. You might give the Suse 10.3 live cd a go. Here is a "sticky forum tutorial" on setting up the full multimedia http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...engine-597476/
