Smile media problem with .avi --- audio only in vlc working rest amarock ,etc. not working

actually the file that i am trying to play is .avi , .wmv , .dat .
since i have just entered the field and that too from windows . it means i am actually trying to play media files by directly " open with " then the particular tool with which i want to open .
plz let me know about my mistake and also the required steps that i must take to get further in this seemingly ordeal .
if you could please let me know about some reference material from where to start getting the feel of LINUX especially KDE Environment . and book to start unix .
in short just let me know from where to start .

You are probably missing closed source codecs (so called w32codecs).
