Media Extender???

Hey guys,

I want to put some of my old hardware and make a media extender.

I have seen on the web GeeXbox and mythbuntu but i have not tried any of them out and I am not really sure if they would do what i want.
Basically I have a bunch of videos encoded in Divix, MPG3, MPG4, OGG, MKV, etc and I want to be be able to play them on my TV.

I am not sure what hardware I would need, do I need a TV capture card (I do not care about recording TV ) or just a card with TV out?
Any recommendations for a card?

Would mythbuntu do what i want and be relatively easy to run?
I want to keep my videos on my Vista machine, would this cause issues with the Linux box accessing and paling them back?

Any advice you guys can pass on would be greatly appreciated.
