MDK is generally buggy, do I recompile? Re-install?

Hello,
The power went out on my system a little while ago, and even though I have all my documents saved and so forth my system (emachines laptop running MDK 10) has become rather buggy. MPlayer is very picky about which files it plays but it usually gives a nasty crash message (and a reinstall of this doesn't do any good), and in general I think that the power outage did something nasty. If this were a Windows computer, I would just reinstall the OS, but it seems that this is not a good idea based on what I have read. Would it be prudent to re-compile my kernel? If reinstalling is an option, how do I go about this?
Thanks!

reinstall is probably the best thing... kernel recompile won't help you, I think.

If you have a separate /home partition, then you can keep everything that is on that partition. You can tell the installer to use that partition as /home and to *not* format it. Otherwise, I would back up the /home directory to get back your personal settings quickly. Actually, I would back it up in eitehr case, just to be sure.

The reinstallation is not hard. You just go through the installation procedure from step 1.
