MDK 8.1 Updates="failure"

After downloading and installing some mdk updates,my printer, internet connection & floppy drive would not work. When I rebooted a lot of "failure" messages appeared as it went through the boot process.
I am a newbie so I decided to re-install using my 3*cd set.I tried to install using the original partiton setup but when it came time to instsall packages, errors appeared: error installing packages:net-tools-1.60-2mdk.i586,ntsysv-1.2.23-1mdk.586.I then tried using a different file system ext3 and reformatted the partitions.Still the same problem, but with different error messages.
In theory if I have reformatted, all data has been lost and I should start with clean partitions. My original install was ok-so I presume my cd's are good-so why the conflict.
